Why I’m walking to raise money for Contact the Elderly

MAR
19

My name is Lauren Sim, I currently work at Barclays Bank as an Assistant Vice President Data Analyst and am a Contact the Elderly Group Coordinator. I have been volunteering with my local group since last year.

My friend Katie and I love walking and last year we signed up for the Kiltwalk and enjoyed it a lot. This year we wanted to take on something even bigger and are walking 96 miles across the West Highland Way to raise money for our local group. I have taken part in a few fundraising challenges with work, but nothing as big as this.  Training so far is going well and we have already completed part of the walk and I'm trying to get into the habit of walking to and from work. I am planning on signing up for this year's Kiltwalk so it's all good practice!

Volunteering with Contact the Elderly has shown me how much company and conversation means to the older guests. Most of them either have no family who live nearby or don’t have any family at all. They are so grateful for the slightest wee thing you do for them and there’s nothing better than putting a smile on their faces. I have loved getting to know them. My Nana who passed away in January 2017 inspires me everyday. She was a complete gem and the best woman ever and I wish she was able to have been part of Contact the Elderly. She would have loved it.

For anyone who is thinking about taking on a fundraising activity to raise money for Contact the Elderly, I would say ‘Do it, there is no such thing as can’t!’.
