A charity is urgently appealing for new volunteers to help isolated older people living alone in Belfast.
The Belfast group currently meets on the last Sunday of every month and the charity needs more volunteers to collect and accompany the older guests to their event and to host the gatherings in their own home.
Muriel Cunningham, 89, has been part of the monthly group in Belfast since it began. She said: “I really love going to the tea parties, I always spend a lovely afternoon there. I’ve made a lot of friends and the volunteers are really lovely and caring. It’s really something I look forward to every month.”
Contact the Elderly would love to hear from anyone who can help out. Drivers will need to have a valid driving licence and their own car and would need to be available one Sunday a month. Hosts generally host an event once or twice a year.
Emma McPhilbin, Head of Special Projects at Contact the Elderly, said: “This is our first Northern Irish group with four older guests currently attending regularly but we need volunteer drivers in the Belfast area to bring more older guests to the tea parties. For older people who live alone, Sundays can be particularly long and difficult.
“The monthly events make a real difference to the lives of an isolated older person so if you feel you can spare a few hours per month, please get in touch.”
If you are interested in becoming a volunteer for Contact the Elderly, or if you know someone aged 75 and over who is living alone in the Belfast area who could benefit from coming along to a tea party, get in touch with the charity by calling 0800 716 543 (freephone) or apply here.
