Contact the Elderly was thrilled to see Shelagh Fogarty win Celebrity Mastermind on Saturday 9 January with Contact the Elderly as her chosen charity.
Fogarty, who is a journalist and LBC radio presenter, has been a fantastic supporter of Contact the Elderly. Her specialist subject was Pope John Paul II and she managed to beat her competition in order to take the much-coveted Mastermind trophy home.
The donation Contact the Elderly received from Fogarty’s appearance on the show will be put to excellent use sustaining our existing groups and helping to launch new groups in areas of greatest need.
Many Contact the Elderly volunteers tuned in to watch the episode and a good number of new volunteers enquired about joining their local group as a tea party host or as a driver.
This added a great boost to our growing coverage over the past few months. In December, Contact the Elderly was chosen as one of the four charities to benefit from The Times Christmas Appeal 2015. Seven features across four weeks showed the breadth and depth of our work and what a difference we make in the communities we work in.
This was also the second mention of Contact the Elderly on mainstream television in as many weeks. Contact the Elderly was featured on The Age of Loneliness, a documentary on BBC One exploring the ‘silent epidemic of loneliness.’ The documentary enjoyed excellent reviews and helped raise awareness of great benefit Contact the Elderly is to both older guests and volunteers.
These media opportunities are invaluable to Contact the Elderly and its aim to double its service delivery by 2020. Find out more about volunteering with us here.
