For Immediate Release:
Announcement of Scotland's first dedicated Cabinet Secretary for Older People – Contact the Elderly’s reaction:
Meryl Davies, CEO of Contact the Elderly, commented:
“We’re delighted that Nicola Sturgeon has appointed Shirley-Anne Somerville MSP as dedicated Cabinet Secretary for Older People in yesterday’s Holyrood reshuffle. For too long now, older people across the UK have lacked a cabinet level ministerial position to champion their cause.
As the UK’s population ages, a cabinet-level ministerial position focusing on the needs of this growing demographic will only become more vital. We hope Westminster follows Holyrood’s enlightened approach, and recognises that with an ageing population, we cannot continue to ignore the needs of our older people.”
Morna O’May, Contact the Elderly’s Head of Service for Scotland, commented:
“Our thousands of Scottish volunteers all are acutely aware of the severe impact that social isolation can have on older people in Scotland. Their work, helping isolated older people reconnect with their community, is so important and we’re proud to have a presence all over Scotland, working with some of the most isolated older people in the country.
Nicola Sturgeon’s decision to create a Cabinet Secretary for Older People at Holyrood is exciting news which has been long overdue. We hope Westminster follows suit.”
