Last week, older guests in Shrewsbury were invited along to the Shropshire Cat Rescue Centre for a traditional afternoon tea and tour of the shelter.
Volunteer Margaret, who was one of the driving forces behind the event, got involved with Contact the Elderly after seeing a message on Twitter whilst she was on holiday calling out for new hosts.
“I thought what a wonderful idea and if Shropshire Cat Rescue could host an afternoon tea for both groups it would be perfect. My father was 94 when he died in 2009 and I thought he would have loved to go to something like this.”
Once Margaret returned to the UK she got in touch with the staff at the centre and asked if they would be interested in hosting. Everyone loved the idea and they hosted the first tea party in July 2017.
“It was a lovely day and after tea we all went down on the lawn and sat under the gazebo. Some of the ladies went into our Moggies Retirement Village to visit our older cats. One of the pygmy goats, Shetland ponies and a chicken where brought to show our visitors and Sparkle, one of the village cats came out on a lead and harness.”
