Bexley Firefighters cook Christmas dinner for Contact the Elderly group

Bexley firefighters spread Christmas cheer by cooking for their local Contact the Elderly group at the station on Sunday, 21 December.
Seven local residents and their drivers were cooked a meal with all the trimmings and served by the chiefs of the emergency services in the borough and Councillor Eileen Palin.
Not only was it an opportunity to show off the firefighters’ cooking skills but it also look out for those most at risk from fire and give important fire safety advice.
A third of people who died in accidental fires in London last year were receiving care services. Firefighters across London are working hard to reduce the risk of those most vulnerable.
Previous research shows that vulnerable people are 18 times less likely to have a fire if they receive a home fire safety visit from firefighters.
Bexley Borough Commander, Richard Welch said:
“I’m so proud of the firefighters for putting on this fantastic meal and for looking after our guests including the drivers who do so much in our community.
“By getting to know those most at need we can hopefully prevent them from having a fire at any time of the year. I’d urge everyone to make sure their elderly friends or family are well protected from fire and I wish everyone a Happy New Year.”
The local ASDA store on The Broadway, Bexleyheath has kindly donated £350 for food and drink which will mean that crews will be able to hold another event in the new year.
