12th Jubilee news update – a year of golden moments

JAN
12
Since 1965 Contact the Elderly has been combating social isolation amongst those aged 75 and over. Now in our 50th year, we want to celebrate our achievements to date and drive volunteer recruitment and fundraising so that we can reach out to even more lonely older people who are completely cut off from society.

To meet the demand for our service and double the number of older guests we take out to tea each month, we need to fulfill our fundraising target of £1 million during our Jubilee Year. We cannot do this alone.

CEO, Mary Rance, says: “We are tremendously excited about the next 12 months, and all the fantastic opportunities that our Jubilee Year will bring. Our unique tried and tested formula of monthly Sunday afternoon tea parties makes a profound difference to the lives of our older guests and with more support from businesses, corporates and the public, we can extend our lifeline to thousands more older people in need of our support.”

Throughout the year we will have a series of regional events taking place across England, Scotland and Wales. And with the ambition to launch 125 new tea party groups over the next 12 months – we are on the lookout for new volunteers and older guests up and down the UK.
To begin our Golden Jubilee celebrations, we already have some very exciting announcements and key dates for your diary. So to update you on what we have in store so far, here is the latest news from the Contact the Elderly HQ:

A SUPER new ambassador

We are delighted to announce the support of our new Contact the Elderly ambassador – Fraser Doherty, of SuperJam.

Not only is the 24 year old an expert when it come to tea parties, but Fraser and his Gran have just been awarded with an MBE from the Queen.

The jam entrepreneur has been involved with Contact the Elderly for a number of years – hosting tea parties for older people in Edinburgh – and of course putting his Grandmother’s now-famous jam recipe into action.

We are thrilled to have Fraser on board and look forward to working with him to help spread the Contact the Elderly message (with lots of jam and cream!)

Launch event in Liverpool

To kick off our Golden Jubilee, we will be celebrating with a grand afternoon tea party hosted by the Crowne Plaza Hotel John Lennon airport on Sunday 25th January.

Not only is the event our first Jubilee Celebration, it also brings together three pioneering Contact the Elderly groups – the first GP group in Storrsdale, the first University group at Liverpool Hope University and the areas first ever Contact the Elderly group in West Derby.
The Lord Mayor of Liverpool, Councillor Erica Kemp CBE, and The High Sheriff of Merseyside are amongst the special guests to attend, along with 50 of the charity’s older guests and volunteers.

19 April 2015 – Tea party Sunday!

To mark our momentous 50th anniversary we are encouraging all Contact the Elderly groups to hold their April 2015 tea parties on Sunday April 19th 2015. With most of our tea parties happening on different Sundays – this will be the first time in Contact the Elderly history that our tea parties all take place on the same day!

In order to extend our tea party celebrations beyond our volunteers and guests, we are asking people around the UK to get involved throughout the year and host their own fundraising tea parties in support of our cause. Please email Holly Anderson, Fundraising Officer, for more information.

So tell your friends, colleagues and neighbours to get a date in their diaries to help us raise vital funds to support the growing number of isolated older people in the UK. All it takes is tea and a piece of cake!
